“Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ” by John Piper

Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (John Piper Small Group)

This small book by John Piper is full of great theological truths without being very heavy or very deep. He writes with a beautifully poetic style that makes the truths he presents seem even more beautiful and more sweet. This book speaks of many of the aspects of our Lord Jesus including His diety, His excellence, His wisdom, His power, His anguish and His sacrifice.  It is only 123 pages long, and was an excellent read.

“Escape” by Carolyn Jessop

I found this book very intriguing. I think I read the whole thing, all 413 pages, in less than three days. It was that good. It was also horrifying, sad, and almost unbelievable. This is an autobiography of a woman who was born into a radical polygamist cult. She tells of the many horrors she endured while trapped in this oppressive religious regime and speaks of the inner workings of the cult. It certainly made me thankful that we take the Bible as our final authority and we do not need a “prophet” to speak for God. This book made me appreciate even more the life of freedom I have in Christ and that His Word is  our standard and foundation for our lives.

“Treasuring God in Our Traditions” by Noel Piper

Treasuring God in Our Traditions

This book is a gem. I wish I would have read it sooner. I highly recommend every mother read this book. Noel Piper (John Piper’s wife) speaks in this book about having a God centeredness in our traditions, whether they be daily routines or special holiday traditions. She uses many personal examples from her family, and gives a multitude of great thoughts and ideas that I plan to incorporate into our family.  This was a very enjoyable and beneficial read.
